Town Board of Supervisors Vacancy

The Town of Oakland has an opening for a Town Chairperson to fill the remaining term vacated by Ted Vratny, who has moved out of the town.  Any person who resides in the Town of Oakland may be considered for this position. The board seat is up for election on April 1, 2025.  

How to apply:  Review the job description below and send an email expressing interest to the Town Clerk,  Susan Dascenzo. Next, plan to attend the next town board meeting on Tuesday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m. and be prepared to state your interest and qualifications.  Following that there will be a question-and-answer period.  The town supervisors will then move into a short, closed session to discuss and return to vote on who will fill the position.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Town Board Chair

Set Agenda for monthly board meetings with Clerk

Same of Special meetings

Same for Electors Meetings.

Conduct Monthly, Special and Elector meetings.

Sit on Board of Review, Run Board of Review Meetings

Assist Town Clerk with Developing Budget and setting priorities for the town in consultation with the Town Board.

Issue Driveway and Road Opening Permits.

Reinspect Driveway if use of property changes, from say a farm to meeting venue.

Conduct Road Tour with Roads Supervisor and prepare list for Town Board members

Issue Emergency Declarations;

                                No Wake Restrictions – No Open Burning – Ban Fireworks

Issue permits for Open Burning and Fire work Displays

Sign Checks

Sign Ordinances as approved by the Town Board

Be Point of Contact for Attorneys, Auditor, Assessor, Building Inspector and other agencies

Receive Notices for Zoning permits and sign off on some of the permits

Negotiate Developers Agreement with Developers, review Agreement language and issues with Town Attorney.

Draft or assist in drafting various Town Ordinances and Resolutions

Supervise, Town Clerk staff, Police Chief, Roads Supervisor, interface with Town Judge and Court Clerk. 

Hire with Town Board consent, attorney to prosecute local cases.

Attend WTA County Meetings, Spring Training esp for BOR, recommend attending Annual Convention.

Maintain working relationship with County Administrator and other department heads, Planning and Zoning, Highway and Emergency Services.  Likewise maintain working relationships with the Village of Cambridge, Jefferson and Fort Atkinson, the Cambridge School District.

Approve Burials in Town Cemeteries (When appropriate)

Answer phone calls from Developers seeking to develop land in the town. Be familiar with the Towns Comprehensive Plan, the restrictions on development in the Urban Service Area and the Rural Preservation areas.

Work Cooperatively with other Town Boards and Agencies

The Lake Ripley Management District

The Town of Oakland Sanitary District

Respond to citizen calls and complaints about everything and anything.

The Town Comprehensive Plan will need a complete overhaul and update to be completed by 2030. Contracting and planning for this will need to start in 2026.
